The term "dermatology" has its roots in the Greek word "derma", which means "skin". Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions involving the skin, hair and nails. There are both medical as well as surgical aspects to dermatology. For instance, certain skin conditions are treated with topical creams and oral medication, whilst others involve surgical excision of skin lesions, or various injections into the skin.
Therapies provided by dermatologists may include:
• Cosmetic filler injections
• Intra-lesional injections
• Laser therapy for conditions such as birth marks, tattoo removal, cosmetic resurfacing and rejuvenation etc.
• Phototherapy for conditions such as psoriasis
• Photodynamic therapy
• Hair removal and hair transplantation
• Cryosurgery for conditions such as warts
• Radiation therapy
• Allergy testing eg. patch and skin prick testing
• Systemic and topical therapies for a wide variety of conditions involving the skin and its appendages
