This typically happens after a blunt trauma to the side of the head. A haematoma (blood clot) which forms may detach the perichondrium (layer surrounding the cartilage) from the underlying ear cartilage.
As the cartilage depends on the perichondrium for its blood supply, the haematoma which forms can result in disruption of this blood supply, leading to necrosis (death) of the cartilage.
Early incision and drainage by an ENT surgeon is generally required, followed by a pressure dressing for about one week. Antibiotics are also usually required.
