Barrett's oesophagus refers to a pre-malignant change in the cells of the lower oesophagus, in which the normal squamous epithelial lining of the lower oesophagus is replaced by metaplastic columnar epithelium. This change believed to be caused by chronic acid reflux from the stomach.
Patients with Barrett's oesophagus may be asymptomatic, or may have symptoms typical of gastroesophageal reflux disease, such as chronic heartburn, dysphagia (difficult swallowing), vomiting blood etc. Diagnosis is via endoscopy and treatment will depend on histological assessment of severity.
