Endometrial cancer is one of the more common cancers among women in Singapore. The endometrium is the inner tissue lining of the uterine cavity, which grows and sheds during the menstrual cycle, and is governed by the female hormones. There has been a gradual increase in incidence of endometrial cancer among Singapore women over the recent years.

Who Is At Risk?
Those considered to be of Increased Risk:
• History of unopposed estrogen therapy • Women who have never been pregnant • Infertility or those who do not ovulate • Late menopause • Tamoxifen therapy • Obesity • Diabetes mellitus • Hypertension
Those considered to be of High Risk:
Women who have or who are at risk of having hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)
Screening For Endometrial Cancer
Thus far, there has been insufficient medical evidence to support screening in the general population, or even in those with Increased Risk. Only women with, or who are at risk of HNPCC (i.e. those of High Risk), should undergo annual screening via transvaginal ultrasound and endometrial biopsy.
Pap smears are useful for screening of cervical cancers, but are not useful for screening of endometrial cancers.
Fortunately, endometrial cancers tend to present with symptoms early in the course of the disease. They typically present with abnormal vaginal bleeding, and women with such symptoms are encouraged to see their doctor early for further evaluation.
