About Dr Yoon

Dr. Yoon Kam Hon is the director of El Shaddai Arthritis and Rheumatism Specialist Medical Centre, which specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of autoimmune conditions and bone, joint, and tendon-related diseases. With the help of his team of dedicated nurses, he assists about 600 patients every month with the goal to alleviate their pain and effectively manage their conditions so they can get back to their lifestyle as soon as possible.

Dr. Yoon graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree as well as his Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine. In May 2001, he was accredited as internal medicine specialist and as a rheumatology specialist in 2002. He has been practicing for more than 15 years and is a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Prior to joining El Shaddai Arthritis and Rheumatism Specialist Medical Centre, Dr. Yoon served at Alexandra Hospital and at the Department of Medicine, National University of Singapore as a visiting rheumatologist registrar. To date, he also serves as a consultant rheumatologist at Gleneagles Hospital, Changi General Hospital, and Arthritis and Rheumatism Specialist Medical Centre.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by mechanical stress on the joint, and inflammation with joint damage. Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, and sometimes an effusion. The main cause is degeneration, combined with hereditary and metabolic factors, which leads to loss of cartilage, sometimes exposing and damaging the underlying bone. Pain makes it difficult to exercise, so muscles may atrophy. Therapeutic measures begin with weight loss and exercise, and include advance joint supplements, anti-inflammatory medications and joint injections. Joint repair and pain relief with a variety of viscosupplementations for all joints including knee, hip and joints are offered in our clinic.

ESWT are audible high energy sound waves which have been employed since around 1980 to disintegrate kidney stones for instance. Shock waves accelerate the healing process by activating the body’s self-healing powers. Damaged tissue gradually regenerates and eventually heals. Currently the clinic is using the machine to treat body pains, normal and diabetic wound ulcers, joints, bones and muscle problems for the knee, shoulder, ankle, fingers, and other parts of the body. Session takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on the site being treated. In general an average of 3 to 5 therapy sessions are necessary at weekly intervals.

Ultrasound is a safe, painless and noninvasive medical test using sound waves to produce pictures inside the body. The ultrasound scanning involves the use of a small transducer (probe) with ultrasound gel placed directly on the skin. Ultrasound images of the musculoskeletal system provide immediate diagnosis of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue disease and inflammation. Ultrasound can detect tendon tears, or tendinitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder, knee swelling, masses or fluid collections in the joints.

Viscosupplementation is the injection of the joint healing and repair fluid into the disease or arthritis joint with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate. VS helps to relieve joint pain and inflammation, repairs the damaged cartilage and restores the lubricant in the joint for the shock absorption and ease of movement. The joints can be injected include the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, spine and finger/toe joints.
